Are you kidding me……why Jersey? What is so great about it?

  • cmg

a little more how to's about the hair styles and less promotion would make MSTV so much better

Love the hair with the flowers! So springy!

NEW Jersey is an awesome place to live and work. Take it from me, I have lived on both coasts, and travel frequently across the US. As to Jerseylicious, it is a TV show, not advertised as a reality show, (which it is not), and is just plain fun to watch. I know the main characters very well, Gayle and Christy are awesome, and the salon is beautiful.

Loving the whole idea of Modern Salon T.V. I just wish the segments were longer than 10 minutes. Maybe 20 or even 30 minutes would be great. All the segments are very inspiring and exciting. So keep 'em com'in. Oh and I love Jerseylicious! We as hairstylist crave reality shows about salon life.

Katherine Penfold:  Welcome back to Modern Salon TV. I am Katherine Penfold.
Trevor Dineen:  And I'm Trevor Dineen. Last episode we watched stylists recreate looks, from the Oscars.
Katherine Penfold:  Went behind the scenes on Vivienne Mackinder’s latest collection.
Trevor Dineen: And took you on a tour of Ted Gibson’s Salon.
Katherine Penfold:  Here is what is coming up this episode.
Trevor Dineen:  We take a look at the larger than life hair and make up in Tim Burton's new “Alice in Wonderland”.
Katherine Penfold: We head back into the classroom at Pivot Point for a lesson on nails.
Trevor Dineen:  And we go behind the scenes for Modern's last cover shoot with Susanna Romano.
Katherine Penfold:  Love it or hate it reality TV is here to stay and the beauty industry is popular content. Jerseylicious, a new show on the style network about Gatsby Salon and is the latest in the long line of shows to feature stylists. Modern Beauty Director Maggie Mulhern attended the premiere; check it out.
Maggie Mulhern:  It is a very exiting night here in New Jersey because it is the premier of the “Jerseylicious” a brand new reality TV show.  Very exiting for us because it combines the best of two wonderful worlds; the salon industry and New Jersey.
(Clip from show)
Gayle Giacomo:  A lot of the episodes, almost all of them, have a situation in it that I am sure every salon owner can relate to because owning a salon you have lot of different personalities and it could be different at times. For my success I feel that I try to understand my employees and I try to relate to them as my family.
Christy Pereira: I am who I am, I portrayed myself who I wanted to. So I really hope that everybody sees that it’s not just about big hair and big nails that it is about lot of different women and one man, you know, and how each individual lives their life.
Anthony Lombardi:  Finally after 15 years in this business sweeping hair, shampooing hair I get the finally get to talk to Modern Salon.
Maggie Mulhern:  So what you are hiding under your hat?
Anthony Lombardi:  Not much [laughing]
Maggie Mulhern:  I am a jersey girl too. And you know we are taking back jersey.
Katherine Penfold:  Got opinion on “Jerseylicious” or any other salon related reality shows?  Post your comment at the end of this episode or a modern space book page.
Trevor Dineen:  Senior editor Alison Shipley takes us back in to the classroom at Pivot Point to give us an update on what she is learning in beauty school. Take it away Alison.
Alison Shipley: Hi guys, Alison here. We are done with theory on nails. In class, we have covered all things nails—from sanitation to diseases and conditions, all the way through how to give a hand massage and which nail shapes and polish colors are trendy. The best part about all this, of course, is we have been able to get manicures and pedicures because we have to practice on each other. I wasn’t exactly sure how I’d feel about giving a pedicure to someone else but it ended up being really fun.  Next to the face, the human hand is the person’s most expressive feature. So they should always look neat and polished.  And caring for client’s hands gives us students an additional outlet for our professional skills.  Check out my blog at modernsalon.com for more pictures of our work.
Katherine Penfold:  In honor of earth month Susana Romano just completed an eco friendly photo shoot for the cover of April’s modern let’s go behind the scenes.
Susanna Romano:  On Gretta’s hair, this is my interpretation of the Mohawk.  It’s modern, it’s sheak, it can still look elegant and cool.  It is still just textured it’s nothing that’s too glam, very natural not too much product its more about getting a texture.
At Salon AKS we try to use products on the hair that are going to basically be nurturing to the hair.  We’re not using any products that are going to make the hair stiff and shapeless.  We want to still give some hold, but all these products are all natural. I used the Phyto line on this updo and it makes the hair very smooth and textured.  Gives it some shine, and basically makes the hair pliable to do whatever it is you need it to do.
Trevor Dineen:  Stylist Cristina Rocha of West Hollywood is rumored to give the best blow out in town.  Modern’s Maggie Mulhern takes a trip to Andy LeCompte Salon to find out more.
Cristina Rocha :  Okay so what I did was I over directed the front hair to get that height here.  I over directed the crown of her hair to get this height here. I never use clips; clips slow me down, personally.  I don’t use metal brushes, for me they don’t work they don’t supply enough tension on the hair; and there is a lot of tension I use boar-bristle brushes only that helps me to get hair smoother. I found for me as well that with metal brushes, if the person doesn’t have coarse hair and they have finer hair, the metal brushes will actually make it flatter. It might be full when they leave, but in an hour or two I should guess quite a bit flatter.
Katherine Penfold: “Alice in Wonderland” reached in 116 million in its first weekend.  Thanks in part to the larger than life hair and make-up, done by Paul Gooch and his team of stylists—so we just had to find out more about the fantasy style.
Melissa Hill:  Hi I am modern salon TV reporter Melissa Hill. I just have come back from “Alice in Wonderland,” Tim Burton’s new film which is a new take on classic tale.
Female Speaker:  The movie’s whimsical hair and make-up have gotten rave reviews and it wowed stylists around the country.  The team they created the look was led by hair stylist Paul Gooch who is also responsible for styles in movie like Sweeney Todd and Becoming Jane from the white creams bold brows and blonde locks to the red queen’s perfect bow-shaped lips and vivid blue shadow to the mad hatters lip shade there is something here for any stylists looking for the inspiration.
Even if you do have to tone it down just a touch. One thing you won’t have to tone down are Alice’s perfectly wavy tresses. You can try those on clients looking for a new special occasion ‘do. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on Alice in wonderland.
Trevor Dineen:  Thanks for tuning in here as this episode airs Modern editors and the Modern Salon TV crew are on site at the American beauty show in Chicago.
